HARBOR WALKKing Park Paving Project |
|||
On Saturday, May 8, 2004,
the Harbor Walk expansion and improvement project at King Park was dedicated in
a ceremony honoring benefactor Mrs. Samuel Hamilton, and JAM Construction owner
Johnny Marshall. Several hundred attended the Picnic/Dedication. [Mrs. Hamilton and Kate Leonard in photo left] Marshall engineered and constructed the walk out of
specially ordered pavers placed over a poured concrete base.
At the same time the sea wall, then needing serious help, was reinforced where necessary. This walkway expansion project was a dream of the Friends of the Waterfront. Then FoW President Vic Farmer, supported by FoW Board of Director member Dave Wixted, proposed the project to the city nearly five years ago. But the city lacked the funds to follow through on a simple gravel walkway. Newport City Councilor Kate Leonard then picked up the lead on this project several years ago and set up the team of Hamilton, Marshall and herself to expand on the simple proposed gravel walk. Councilor Leonard sought and received the nearly
$180,000 of needed funding from the Hamilton Newport Improvement Foundation.
In addition, Leonard helped coordinate the required state approvals from the CRMC, and the help from the city Parks and Recreation Department. In attendance and sponsoring the cookout at the
dedication were the Ancient Order of Hibernians who have the Hibernians First
Lodge adjacent to the Walk. Music was provided by the Publicans Irish Band and the Dartmouth University Barbary Coast Jazz Band. |
