HARBOR WALKFoW Dedicates the King Park |
|||
On Earth Day, Saturday, April 17,
2004 the Friends of the Waterfront unveiled its King Park Historical Marker
sign, the culmination of a grant from the North Family Trust.
Nearly a hundred volunteers joined together to celebrate the sign dedication combined with a Earth Day clean up of King Park. The park is the largest park on the Newport harbor waterfront and includes a little league field, beach, playground, bandstand, boat ramp, and a memorial to Gen. Rochambeau of the Colonial forces supporting General Washington. FoW has spearheaded the annual spring cleanup at King Park over the last ten years. Several years ago FoW selected this spot at King Park as the
ideal location to erect a sign that related the current harbor to Newport
harbor's historical past over the last 300 years. The sign's design also
included a diagram of all the RI state CRMC designated public rights of way
that waterfront walkers may want to explore. FoW members Lee McCabe,
Kathleen O'Connell, Linda Hammer, John Dalessio, Dave Wixted, Liz Mathinos and
Christine Sherrin were the Marker/Grant Team. They checked and double checked
the historical information with the Newport Historical Society and other
related groups mentioned.The historical aspects of the sign cover Fort Adams, Ida Lewis Yacht Club, Rochambeau monument, Newport Bridge, Goat Island and Wellington Square. |
